FROM THE INSIDE OF THE HOUSE

Detail of carved wood curtains and overheard words.
The text is stenciled on the outside of the shade and can be read from the inside.

Daddy had pneumonia when he was five and his mother's brother, who was a doctor, came out from town.
Daddy's mother and uncle went outside to discuss his condition and, without thinking, stopped outside Daddy's window.
"Well, Deanie," said Uncle Doc, "I'll come back in the morning but it won't do any good because he is not going to live through the night."
"How did you feel when you heard that?" I asked.
He said, "I knew it wasn't true."
